Rio Content Market: Moonshot Takes Bedlam-Big Man’s ‘Disturbia’ for Brazil (EXCLUSIVE)

RIO DE JANEIRO — Local production company Moonshot has recently inked an agreement with London-based production company Bedlam Productions (“King’s Speech”) for the making in Brazil of horror series “Disturbia,” Moonshot CEO Roberto d’Avila told Variety in an exclusive interview at the 2016 Rio Content Market.

The Brazilian series will have six, stand-alone episodes of one hour. Alex Gabassi, a director of local series for HBO (“Psi” and “Destino: Sao Paulo”) and MTV (“MTV na estrada” and “MTV sports”), will helm.

“We will produce ‘Disturbia’ first in Brazil, air it here, and then sell the format in the world market. The fact we will have an actual series to show will definitely help the format’s sales abroad.” said D’Avila, stressing that horror productions, as opposed to comedies, translate well to other cultures.

D’Avila said they have still not decided when the production will begin. He speculated “Disturbia” would fit well the subs of pay-TV nets Space (owned by Turner) and Universal’s Syfy.

Created and written by Adam Phillips, “Disturbia” was originally a property of Bedlam and Brighton-based Big Man Films.

The psychological horror series will have the urban chaos of Sao Paulo, South America’s largest city, as a backdrop. Technology, which allows the smallest indiscretion to go viral, will play a major role in the series’ plots.

Sao Paulo-based Moonshot has successfully adapted an international format in Brazil. The company produced three seasons of “In Treatment,” an adaptation of an Israeli format, which aired on local pay-TV net GNT from 2012 to 2014. The series was an audience success and was acclaimed by critics.
